Next Steps
Pat yourself on the back and take the plunge. Here’s how the truly committed are further cutting their emissions:

1. Go ahead and buy the carbon offsets for that flight you’ve got tickets for, then find a way to avoid the next one.

2. Get rid of your car. Okay, if that’s too much for you, try having “no driving days” each week. Buy raingear, some bike bags, and give the bike commute a shot. Walk to the gym or the store. Figure out the bus route or a carpool. Just try it.

3. Make changes where you work, shop, play or pray. Talk to friends, family and co-workers about making changes in their lives. Transportation is the biggie. Next comes energy used in our homes and all the stuff we consume, including food. See the previous pages for actions to suggest.

4. Contact legislators, government officials and community leaders to ask them to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Call, email, write or make a personal visit.

5. If you're planning to move, chose a smaller home. 3000 green feet uses more resources than a 1500 sq ft traditional home. It's not just the building materials, but also the heat, light, water, lightbulbs, carpet, cleaning products, stuff to fill the closets and furniture to fill the rooms. All that stuff has a carbon tag associated with material extraction, production, use (for some) and transportation. Size matters!
