Waste contributes to climate change through methane emitted from landfills as well as from the emissions “embodied” in an item from the energy needed to mine, grow or harvest the resources and the energy involved in production, packaging and transportation.

Compost food scraps

1. Compost to save about 100 lbs of CO2 equivalent annually. When your compost is complete, use it to fertilize your garden! Save money by switching to once a month or biweekly trash pickup.

Recycle

1. Recycle newspapers, cans, glass and plastic. A three person household could reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by more than half a ton with this easy action.

2. Recycle used computers, cell phones, and other electronics to reduce the use of raw materials and keep toxins out of landfills.

3. Take old building supplies to BRING Recycling and shop there for "new" ones. Give used building materials a second life!

4. Properly dispose of your compact fluorescent lights and other household chemicals with the City of Eugene. Call 682-4120 to schedule an appointment. Fluorescents can also be recycled at most hardware stores to avoid releasing mercury into landfills.
