CLI Supports Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit
The Climate Leadership Initiative’s Climate Preparedness Program provided strategic and technical assistance to the first Southeast Florida Regional Climate Leadership Summit held in Fort Lauderdale on October 23, 2009. The summit brought leaders from Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe Counties together to usher in a regional collaboration to reduce carbon emissions and to prepare for the impacts of global climate change. The representatives of the four counties unveiled a Regional Climate Compact for each County Commission to review and adopt to formalize their regional collaboration on climate issues and provide future directions. The planning process is designed to reduce carbon emissions and prepare the region for sea level rise and other adverse impacts of global climate change expected this century. The four-county Southeast Florida region is home to 5.5 million people, a population greater than 30 states.
